Great oasis in Bordeaux

We wanted to be in Bordeaux but not in the city enter so we chose this wonderful rental. It is an oasis in the suburbs. You feel in your own little world away from it all but close to everything. It is an old property renovated with modern amenities. We. Could sleep forever because you do not hear trafic or noise. There is parking, a yard, bbq and a table outside. We could travel anywhere during the day and come back at night. The ownners Valerie and Jean-Luc aver so welcoming . They treat you very well. A gem!!

Fantastic hospitality and great location

Review from Trip Advisor

July 2017

Le Clos de la Treille is in a great location in Pessac just outside Bordeaux. There is a bus stop a 2 minute walk from the house which takes you into central Bordeaux in just under 40 mins. There is also a tram stop on Line B a 20 minute walk which goes into the centre of Bordeaux. We hired a car, but didn't find we needed it because the location was so good and bus / tram links close by and frequent.

Jean-Luc and Valerie were perfect hosts. They made us feel incredibly welcome and spoke excellent English. They provided excellent driving directions from the airport as well as host of recommendations in terms of wine tastings, restaurants and places to visit in Bordeaux.

The accommodation itself was in great condition and very well equipped with oven, hob, coffee machine and everything else you need to self cater, including a pantry with all the basics to start you off. The double bed was really comfy and shower and bathroom really well equipped and modern. There is also a delightful veranda to sit on of the evening and enjoy the afternoon sun. In addition there is a large garden for children to play in.

All in all this is one of the best self catering holidays we have booked and will definitely be returning in the near future. Thank you Jean-Luc and Valerie so much.

Perfect Apartment. Modern, Fashionable. Large Tree-Shaded Yard

Review from Trip Advisor

May 2017

This was our first stay at Le Clos de la Treille but it will definitely not be our last visit. The gite is fully modernized (part of building erected in 1700's) : bright, roomy with fashionable furnishings. Kitchen includes new appliances (a large refrigerator!) with everything you will need to prepare meals. The apartment is wonderfully maintained and the gite has full access to the lovely, tree-shaded back yard complete with benches and BBQ grill. The patio of the gite has a large table with 6 chairs for enjoying the exquisite back yard. The bathroom, as the rest of the apartment, is spotless, with a private WC room. The hosts, Jean-luc and Valerie provided us with personal attention and information about the area, setting up dinner reservations and pointing us to non touristy wineries and wine co-ops to try. We have already booked another visit to this gite. A little slice of heaven in Pessac.

Perfect family holiday in Bordeaux

Review from Trip Advisor

September 2016

This place is absolutely perfect for a family holiday. We have 2 small children.

The owners - Valerie and Jean-Luc are brilliant hosts. It was our first time in Bordeaux and when we arrived, Valerie (who speaks perfect English) gave us lots of useful tips for getting around town and she already had books for us to read with our 3 year old

The property - the gite works perfectly depending on your needs. For the days you don't feel like venturing out to town, you can relax at the property without feeling cooped up. There's lots of space on the grounds.

The location - Not tricky to get to. We took the Eurostar to Paris then TGV to Bordeaux, which was the longer, fun, scenic route. When we returned home we flew from Bordeaux, which was a 20 min journey. Supermarkets are really near. There's one 400m away. Also, travelling to central Bordeaux was so easy (and cheap) by bus or tram.

Brilliant, brilliant holiday. Would definitely go back.

March 2016

Valérie and Jean-Luc are the most generous, committed and passionate hosts we have ever met. They gave us a great welcome and we immediately felt at home in their beautifully furnished cottage. Everything there is of high quality and made with love.

They both made a tremendous effort to explain where and how to best explore the region. Their insider tips were of great value. The garden and terrace are lovely, unfortunately it was too cold over Easter to enjoy. But we fully profited from the broad view into the green. The location is extremely calm, not a sound at night, except for the birds in the morning. Easy to get delicious baguettes and croissants every morning from the nearby bakery, and a supermarket is right there, too.

The cottage is perfectly situated for visitors who want to explore not only the city of Bordeaux, but also the beautiful places along the Atlantic and the wine region by car. For Bordeaux, we took the tram which was very convenient.

Ideal for visitors who don’t speak French but enjoy communication with their hosts: Both Valérie (an English teacher) and Jean-Luc are fluent in English, and Valérie even speaks German.

We had a gorgeous week at Le Clos de la Treille and we will definately come again next time we’ll be in Bordeaux. Le Clos de la Treille and its wonderful hosts are more than highly recommended to anyone – all our friends in Berlin are already waiting for their chance to spend the next vacation there – so you better hurry to book!

The highlight of our 5 week family trip to Spain and France

September 2015

What a hidden gem Le Clos de la Treille is. The moment we pulled into Valerie and Jean-Luc's tucked away driveway and saw a large Aussie flag welcoming us, and then saw their gorgeous property, we had giant smiles on our faces. It's hard to say exactly what makes a holiday house special. It's a combination of many things. This place has it all - and more.

1) Location - Close to all Bordeaux's wonders but in a quiet and stunning property. Also walking distance to a bakery and supermarket which we found very handy. We followed Valerie's advice to use the cheap local tramways so we didn't need to find parking in the City Centre. Our kids loved this day trip.

2) Facilities - We were in desperate need of a washing machine and this property had this and everything we needed to self-cater. It was the only place we felt immediately "at home" - all the little touches Valerie adds with fresh homemade cakes waiting on our table and beautiful linen made this property feel warm and inviting.

3) Child friendly - For us, with 9 and 6 year old boys, having a large garden to play in and explore made a world of difference. My boys were delighted when they found books to read at bed time. Valerie had thoughtfully put English children’s books on their bunk beds for them to discover. Valerie and Jean-Luc also have 2 children and all four had a wonderful time playing together. Another highlight for my boys was being invited to bake cookies with Valerie and her children. Valerie made sure all the kids had turns to roll out dough, make shapes and then decorate with all sorts of yummy toppings. What a treat!

4) Hosts – It’s not often you meet people who really love what they do. Valerie delivered delicious homemade goodies almost every day and was always happy to answer all our itinerary questions. Valerie’s attention to detail and amazing collections of guide books, brochures and day trip options are incredible. Make sure you book in plenty of time here because there is so much to see and do and Valerie has a huge array of suggestions to suit particular tastes. The best memories from holidays abroad usually come from connections with the local people. It was an unexpected pleasure to get to know Valerie and Jean-Luc. They both speak fluent English (unfortunately we speak very little French). When I commented on her beautiful bed and table linen, she immediately volunteered to take me shopping to the best linen factory outlets. It was the beginning of what I hope to be a lifelong friendship.

Recommending Le Clos de la Treille is easy and I have friends and family already wanting to experience Valerie and Jean-Luc’s memorable hospitality. We hope to visit again one day.

Perfect Place from which to Explore the Bordeaux Region

Review from TripAdvisor

October 2015

This is a guest house adjoining the impressive main property where the owners live with two small children. Our initial slight concerns for privacy were proven unfounded - the owners are the most wonderful people and there was never an issue of privacy. Quite the contrary - we had booked the rental several months in advance and thanks to the energetic Valerie, we felt like family long before we even arrived! She provided us with such excellent area information and advice for our excursions that it was like having our very own tour guide!

The property is located in an upscale and quiet neighborhood in Pessac on the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux. This proved to be an excellent base for our excursions to several vineyard and winery attractions, such as Chateau Pape Clement in Pessac (just a 10 minute drive), Chateau Smith Haut Lafite (unbelievably beautiful, just half an hour away, where we had the wine tasting of our lives), the famous Chateau Lynch-Barges in riverside Pouillac (an hour's drive through a pretty part of Bordeaux with numerous chateux), and the city of Bordeaux itself that you reach best by just taking the city bus from the other side of the street (45 minutes, a nice and low cost sightseeing trip for EUR 1.50/person each way).

The guest house is spacious and very comfortable for 2 or 4 people (it was just my wife and myself so very nice). The workmanship and quality of the interior beats the best hotels, and that includes the bathroom, shower, towels, bed-linen, and kitchen.

The Internet was a tad unstable at times, and the owners attributed it to some issues they experienced after two cable operators merged their operations but it was not a real problem. Jean-Luc restarted the router a couple of times and we were quickly online again. Apart from French TV channels there is a large number of non-French free-to-air and ethnic channels but no regular pay-TV fare such as CNN, ESPN, CNBC, etc. Well, if you are on vacation you hardly need that anyway!

The owners are the most gracious and hospitable people you can encounter and since Valerie is a local and accomplished English teacher, non-French speakers (like ourselves) will have an easy time to get advice on what to do and see. There is an ample supply of maps and guide books in the property, but the best way is simply to tell Valerie what you are interested in and she will suggest more things to do than you will have time to accomplish - and she will happily make phone calls on your behalf to book vineyard visits, suggest local restaurants, etc. We have rented places in several countries but never had such great local support!

We stayed for a week and time flew by all too quickly but that's of course a sign of having had a good time and we left with many fond memories. We drove back to the TGV train station in Angouleme where we had originally arrived for the prior week's visit to Cognac. On the way we stopped over for a couple of hours in the very pretty wine town of Saint Emilion - cobble stone streets and picturesque old buildings, wine shops galore and beautiful vistas (but, alas, also very touristy).

If you have your ways by Bordeaux, you can hardly find a nicer base than "Le Clos de la Treille" - quiet, comfortable, ample parking in the front yard of the rental, and in the care of the wonderful owners Valerie and Jean-Luc.Highly recommended!

Wonderful, Comfortable, a Definite Must!

This was our first time in the Bordeaux area. We would definitely stay here again! The home was spacious, well equipped, very clean and wonderfully decorated. It was very comfortable and relaxed staying here. Our owners Jean Luc and Valerie went out of their way to make us feel at home and provided us with a multitude of suggestions for things to do, restaurants, etc. Their English language skills are excellent. They are a very warm and friendly family and very pleased we rented with them. Valerie also supplied much information even before we left Canada!

If you don't want to drive into Bordeaux you can use the Park & Ride at Pessac Alouette and for 4.50 Euro return, you can take the Tram into the city for the day. We did this three times.

What a wonderful 5 nights we have just spent at this amazing house. I cannot recommend it enough. The gite was beautiful and had everything we needed, including a welcoming bottle of wine and breakfast provided for the first morning. Travelling with my partner and 7 month old child, it was so great to have a rental to stay in that provided everything to make our stay that much more comfortable. The owners Valerie and Jean-Luc were fantastic. They were so warm and welcoming and had made every effort to accommodate our son, providing us with a change mat, high chair etc. They were incredibly helpful with directions, information, bookings…everything! Nothing was too much trouble for them. Bordeaux itself is so beautiful and we visited the towns of St Emillion and Archachon which were great. The gite is conveniently placed a few minutes walk away from shops and it is very easy to get around from there. We have stayed in a few places as a couple and now as a new family, and not many places will stay in our hearts as much as this one. Book it now. You will not regret it.

The 6 days we spent in this accommodation was fantastic. The owners - Valerie and Jean- Luc were brilliant - gave us helpful day trips hand written to show us new places, supplied us with maps and advice on where to park and catch the tram. The shops were close, the gite was extremely well supplied with all mod cons, no steps, new appliances and beautifully decorated. At the end of the day we enjoyed debriefing about our day and getting new ideas for the next day. 20 mins to Bordeaux, 40 mins to the coast and 15 mins to vineyards. An unforgettable holiday that we would gladly repeat all the way from Australia.

A friend and I wanted an authentic weekend in Bordeaux and decided to rent a gite. The place was lovely, even nicer than advertised. But what made the experience really incredible was Jean-Luc & Valerie. Not only did they help us book several wine trips and meals, they even set up a private tasting with a winemaker in the family. They prepared an authentic French meal with everything homemade. Truly an amazing experience, would recommend to anyone who wants a local experience!

The owner has just finished this flat. It's all new, very neat, comfortable, cosy, and decorated very tastefully and colourfull. We felt very welcome by the very detailled itinerary we received in advance, the free first meal that was waiting for us, and the many usefull advices we got about interesting places to see and things to do, where to park our car for free etc. It's like the best of both worlds: having some kind of private tourist information center like you can have in a hotel or b&b, together with the freedom of your own space like when you rent a house. The beds were made, towels provided, as well as soap, shampoo, coffee, tea, jam, and lots of other commodities. It made our stay very relaxed, and gave us a feeling of luxury. The beds were very good (firm), with very good duvets. Kitchen was very well equiped and practical, the bathroom has a spacious shower.

Valérie and Jean-Luc were very kind. We keep very good memories to this place!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

We stayed at Le Clos de la Treille at 10 Avenue de Champagne for a long weekend in late June 2014. Le Clos de la Treille is located in Pessac which is a mature residential neighbourhood outside central Bordeaux. We were welcomed by Valerie & Jean-Luc to their beautiful property which is set back on substantial grounds from the Avenue de Champagne. Both Valerie & Jean-Luc speak excellent English and made us (family of 4 including 2 young children) feel very welcome.

Guests stay in an independent single storey Gite (holiday home) adjacent to Valerie & Jean-Luc’s house. There is a shared driveway but the Gite has a separate entrance and parking area. The Gite contains a large living room / kitchen area, 2 bedrooms (1 double bed & 1 bunk bed) and spacious bathroom facilities. The Gite is tastefully decorated and well equipped (TV, fridge freezer, microwave etc) with a large shared garden area

Valerie advised us where to shop locally and where to visit on our trip to the Bordeaux area. We got great value & tasty local wine & food (including plenty to bring home)!. Central Bordeaux is a c.20 minute drive or c.40 minute tram ride from the Gite in Pessac. Bordeaux has a beautiful city centre full of neo-classical buildings with well preserved squares and plenty of restaurants and cafes – the atmosphere in the evening is great! Valerie suggested we take the children (aged 6 & 3) to the water mirror (miroir d’eau) along the river front in central Bordeaux. The water mirror consists of a large flat surface which has plumes of water vapour followed by water gurgling up to create a large shallow lake. The kids loved playing in it, especially on a hot sunny day (just remember to bring a towel and change of clothes)!

We wanted to see some vineyards when we were in Bordeaux and Valerie recommended that we visit St. Emillion where some of her relatives make wine. St. Emillion is a picturesque medieval hill town surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see and its less than an hours drive away from Le Clos de la Treille. We had a lovely lunch, bought plenty of wine and enjoyed spending the day in the surrounding countryside.

There is plenty to do for visitors in and around Bordeaux. For anybody considering a trip, I would highly recommend staying at Le Clos de la Treille as it is comfortable with plenty of character (a pleasant change from the standard hotel chains), Valerie & Jean Luc are great hosts who speak good English and make this a home away from home. This really is an undiscovered gem of a place and we will be back for longer next year!
